On August 26, 1789, France's National Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen which declared that "Men are born free and equal in rights. Social distinctions may be founded only upon the general good." Although the articles did not specifically address the abolition of the nobility, the Assembly took up the subject in their subsequent June 19, 1790 meeting which declared the abolition of hereditary titles.
