(Subject: The Bargain Basement - 2) The siege from 1941 to 1944 was a prolonged military blockade undertaken from the south by the Army Group North of Nazi Germany against the Soviet city of Leningrad. The siege started on 8 September 1941, when the last road to the city was severed. Although the Soviet forces managed to open a narrow land corridor to the city on 18 January 1943, the siege was not lifted until 27 January 1944, 872 days after it began. Nearly three million people were trapped inside Leningrad. When the siege was lifted just under half were dead, killed by the Germans, hunger cold and terror.
