1829. Four Certificates Appointing a Distinguished Litchfield Judge [Manuscript Archive]. [Woodruff, Morris (1777-1840)]. [4 Judicial Appointment Certificates]. Litchfield, CT, 1829-1839. 12-1/2" x 7-3/4" part-printed bifolia, text running parallel to fold line, blind-embossed seal to 3 certificates and residue from removed seal to 1 certificate. He "felt deeply the importance of having a reputable court" and discharged his duties on the court with gravitas and distinction (Kilbourn). His sons George C. and Lewis B. Woodruff became prominent Litchfield attorneys. These certificates document his appointments as associate judge and commissioner of the court in 1829, 1835, 1836 and 1839. They are signed by the respective governors of Connecticut at the time, Gideon Tomlinson (1829), Henry W. Edwards (1835 and 1836) and William W. Ellsworth (1839). Kilbourn, The Bench and Bar of Litchfield County, Connecticut 78.
