The author drew upon the "Historical Edition" of The Victoria Advocate and brought together additional stories of the area that may be referred to as "the Cradle of Texas History". He begins with the ill-fated La Salle settlement on Matagordia Bay and moves through the Spanish reaction to the French, the Anglo-American colonization of Texas leading to the Texas Revolution. He deals with the Mexican and the Civil war and the rise of the cattle industry. He also deals with De Leon family, the Taylor-Sutton feud, and makes this an interesting read on an historic county. Laid in is a map of the town of Victoria. A lovely copy, near fine bound in green pictorial cloth depicting a long-horn, lettered and decorated in black and gilt, spine lettering gilt, pictorial endpapers.
