About This Item

[London]: Photographer unknown, 1960. 1st Edition. No binding. Very Good. INCLUDES ALL 11 COMMONWEALTH 1960 ATTENDEES SIGNATURES

The 1960 Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference was the tenth Meeting of the Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Nations. It was held in the United Kingdom in May 3-13, 1960 hosted by Prime Minister Maurice Harold Macmillan in the UK. The 1960 Commonwealth Prime Ministers' meeting may well prove to have initiated a new stage in Commonwealth development. This was the first Commonwealth conference since Malayan independence in August 1957. At the meeting, Malaya's prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman and his government vigorously opposed the apartheid policies of South Africa and, with the support of Pakistan, India and Ghana, demanded that the issue be addressed by the Commonwealth. However, Macmillan insisted that the final communique could only include matters on which the leaders were unanimous. For the first time the Prime Ministers declared publicly that they were not prepared to give advance consent to a charter member remaining in the Commonwealth after it became a republic. It is interesting to also note, the year 1960 was called "the year of Africa" with 17 African nations becoming independent.

Signed 1960 photo of the 11 Commonwealth participants:

• Size of cardboard with signatures and fine condition photo mounted: 22-1/2 x 17 inches.

• Size of the black and white photograph mounted to card: 14 x 9-1/2 inches. Superb autographed professional portrait photograph, nicely mounted from the Commonwealth Prime Ministers, Heads of State or official representatives attending the conference held in London in May 1960. The photograph is autographed (some signatures very faded) by all eleven members in formal, sitting pose.

In sequence from left to right are:

1) Tunku Abdul Rahman, Prime Minister of Malaya;

2) E. J. Cooray, Minister of Justice of Ceylon;

3) Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister of India;

4) Walter Nash, Prime Minister of New Zealand;

5) John Diefenbaker, Prime Minister of Canada;

6) Harold Macmillan, Prime Minister of Great Britain (Chairman);

7) Robert Menzies, Prime Minister of Australia;

8) E. H. Louw, Minister of Extemal Afairs, South Africa;

9) Mohammed Ayub Khan, President of Pakistan;

10) Kwame Nkrumah, Prime Minister of Ghana;

11) Roy Welensky, Prme Minister of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.
