About This Item

[Rehoboth [Rehobeth, Somerset County, Maryland], November 5, 1787]. 1½ pages. 8¼ x 6¾ inches. 200 words. Laid paper. Transmittal folds; very good.

John Gunby (ca. 1727-1791), son of Kirk Gunby, married Sarah Melton (d. 1798) in 1756 in Somerset County. He became a Brigadier-General during the American Revolution, and he was likely related to General John Gunby of the Maryland Line, who was also from Somerset County. John Gunby was a prisoner of war at some point during the conflict. His branch of the Gunby line had been in Somerset County since early 1700s. (Timothy Jane Wilson)

In this post-war letter, Gunby writes from his Somerset County home. Gunby's letter discusses the delivery of a final shipment of sugar staves, a pending contract, and financial matters related to the staves' payment. He also raises concerns about a previous charge for gunpowder and shot, and requests additional supplies for Captain Holland, including canvas. Addressed to a Mr. Gilmore, the letter reads, in full: "Rehoboth [Rehobeth, Somerset County, Maryland] the 5th Novbr. 1787 Sir, Mr. Holland will Deliver the Last of the Sugar Staves [wooden pieces or slats used in the construction of barrels or casks, particularly for storing and transporting sugar] that I could get.
