About This Item
Book. Poor. Soft cover. --A Handwritten, Well-Illustrated Treatise on Shingaku-- the religious movement that flourished in Japan in 1725-1875. The movement was begun by Ishida Baigan (1685-1744) and his successor Teshima Toan (1718-1786), but the religion spread broadly in the years following by a group of well-trained preachers travelling Japan. Shingaku arose in Japan as the country emerged from centuries as a closed society- as Japan industrialized, Shingaku became a cultural foundation. Its religious teachings fused Confucian values with Buddhism and Japanese Shinto. This is an unusual item in very nice condition- hand-written & well illustrated manuscript, c1785, describing Shingaku. Measures 6"x 9", there are (47) pages of manuscript and (21) fine ink drawings. Some early worm tunneling evident throughout..
