Description:
London: M. Lewis No.1 Pater-Noster-Row, 1770. Book. Good. No Binding. 1st Edition. Mary Lewis, Moravian and Independent, was a bookseller/printer in business with her husband, son-in-law, and daughter at 1 Paternoster Row, 1756-91. Upon the death of her husband, John Lewis, in 1754, Mary Lewis took over his printing business and bookshop at 1 Paternoster Row, only a short distance from Joseph Johnson's bookshop in St. Paul's Courtyard. Though Ian Maxted describes her as 'Printer to the Moravians' (she was the exclusive London publisher of the works of the Moravian evangelist, John Cennick), Lewis was more likely a Calvinistic Methodist and later an Independent, her evangelical Calvinism being shared by her Particular Baptist friends, Joseph and Martha Gurney. Joseph collaborated with Mary Lewis on several publications in the 1760s and '70s, including the popular Gospel Magazine. This issue, #52, April, 1790. 1st/1st, nice condition . Interesting content, including…

Description:
Book. Poor. Soft cover. --A Handwritten, Well-Illustrated Treatise on Shingaku-- the religious movement that flourished in Japan in 1725-1875. The movement was begun by Ishida Baigan (1685-1744) and his successor Teshima Toan (1718-1786), but the religion spread broadly in the years following by a group of well-trained preachers travelling Japan. Shingaku arose in Japan as the country emerged from centuries as a closed society- as Japan industrialized, Shingaku became a cultural foundation. Its religious teachings fused Confucian values with Buddhism and Japanese Shinto. This is an unusual item in very nice condition- hand-written & well illustrated manuscript, c1785, describing Shingaku. Measures 6"x 9", there are (47) pages of manuscript and (21) fine ink drawings. Some early worm tunneling evident throughout..

Description:
Philadelphia: J & W Kite, 1843. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 2nd Edition. 12mo. black bds. rule & gilt. Quakers. The writer of these memorandums was well known to many persons in the religious Society of Friends, as a useful and consistent member, and an elder whose example was instructive and edifying. It is not intended by the present publication to eulogise her character, but to magnify the power of Divine grace, which made her what she was, and to hold up to view the blessed effects of humble, unreserved submission to its heavenly visitations, as an encouragement to others, to pursue the same path, which led her safely through all the dangers and temptations of this chequered life, to a peaceful and happy close. Her parents, Thomas and Jane Temple, lived in Pennsbury, Chester County, Pennsylvania, which was the place of her nativity, and where she resided until her removal to Philadelphia. .

Description:
Pasadena, CA, 1918. Book. Good. Soft cover. Inscribed on the Cover By Upton Sinclair. 1st Edition. This excoriating critique of religion, especially as represented by powerful clerical institutions, is a lesser-known work by the author who had earlier become famous with his publication of The Jungle, an expose of the poor labor conditions and unsanitary practices in Chicago's meat-packing industry. More than just a tirade against religion, this is an impassioned, idealistic socialist writing at the beginning of the First World War, when the notion of an international socialist revolution still seemed like a very real possibility to many of the left-leaning thinkers of the day. Sinclair's chief concern is social justice and his aim is to enlighten common people by training his critical intelligence like a sharpshooter on the many hypocrisies of established religion, which stand in the way of achieving a just society for all. More than anything he is particularly incensed by the collusion of…
