Barbary Shore

By Mailer, Norman

Barbary Shore is Norman Mailer's second published novel, written after Mailer's great success with his 1948 debut The Naked and the Dead. It concerns a protagonist who rents a room in a Brooklyn boarding house with the intention of writing a novel. Wounded during World War II, he is an amnesiac, and much of his past is a secret to himself. After Rinehart & Company published the novel in 1951, it received poor reviews and sold poorly.

BARBARY SHORE.

Mailer, Norman.

New York:: Rinehart. (1951).. First edition. From the collection of Adeline Lubell-Naiman. INSCRIBED "To Adel and Lucky / - from the sweet / megalomaniac / With love / Norman / April 1951." Head of spine creased and bumped, edge wear to the cheap boards, light foxing to endpapers, small stain to fore edge, otherwise about very good in lightly chipped dust jacket with rubbing to edges and folds. Adeline Lubell-Naiman was the editor instrumental in the eventual publication of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD. In 1946, while an editor at Little, Brown, Lubell-Naiman convinced Mailer to submit the first 200 pages of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD, which she talked up to her publisher. Unfortunately, she was also the one to suggest historian and critic Bernard DeVoto read the manuscript--he recommended not publishing. But Mailer submitted it to Rinehart, who published the book in 1948. Over the years, Lubell-Naiman remained close friends with Mailer and his wives. In the summer of 1968 she even played the role of "Adeline McCarthy," a president of a women's college in Mailer's film "Maidstone" (Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center website). .

BARBARY SHORE

Mailer Norman

New York: Rinehart and Co, 1951. First edition. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth lettered in white on the spine, in scarce red, white and black dustjacket. 312 pp. A very fine copy with only very minimal evidence of age. The jacket in very pleasing condition with only light mellowing to the spine panel. A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Mailer’s second novel, dealing with the post-war era. “BARBARY SHORE is a courageous novel. Its theme is controversial and disturbing. It is written with uncompromising honesty and passionate conviction. It is our belief, as publishers, that it will be met by violent denunciation and enthusiastic approval. “ As the NAKED AND THE DEAD was the most important novel of World War II, so, we believe, BARBARY SHORE will be one of the most memorable of its aftermath.” -R.C. A symbolic treatment of the conflict between leftist and rightist political forces in the United States.

E-29: Rinehart & Company. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1951. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Hardcover. 8vo. Rinehart & Co. Inc. 1951. 312 pgs. First Edition/First Printing. Signed by Norman Mailer on the title page. DJ present but lacking the spine and with chips and missing pieces present to the extremities of the DJ. Bound in decorated cloth boards. Boards has light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Published at the height of the McCarthy era, Norman Mailer’s audacious novel of socialism is at once an elegy and an indictment, a sinuous moral thriller and an intellectual slugfest. Wounded during World War II, Mike Lovett is an amnesiac, and much of his past is a secret to himself. But when Lovett rents a room in Brooklyn, he finds that his housemates have secrets of their own: One betrays a husband no one ever sees; another may have been a Communist executioner. Combining Kafkaesque unease with Orwellian paranoia, Barbary Shore plays havoc with our certainties and delivers its effects with a force that is pure Mailer. Barbary Shore

Mailer, Norman

New York: Rinehart, 1951. Bound in the publishers original black paper covered boards, this is the first impression of the first edition. The Rinehart seal on the copyright page denotes the first edition as called for. Book sits solid and square with all corners sharp. Previous owners name stamped to front free endpaper does not detract and remains quite discreet. A clean copy inside and out. Norman Mailers brilliant second book after he burst on to the scene with The Naked and the Dead. An absorbing novel that deals with people, politics and patriotism in any order. Housed in the scarce green and black variant dustwrapper with publishers printed price intact on front inside flap. No precedent established as to which colour dustwrapper published first. Routine rubbing and wear to the folds and edges with some chipping to the spine area. Enigmatic black and white photograph of a 28 year old Norman Mailer to the rear panel taken by Robert Frank. Despite the average wear and signs of handling to a dustwrapper which is not robust by nature, the dustwrapper remains intact and in presentable condition. Protected in a removable archival booksleeve to preserve its condition. Photographs of the book and the dustwrapper are available on request. A solid copy of the late authors interesting second novel.. First Edition. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. FIRST EDITION.

MAILER, Norman (1923-2007)

London: Jonathan Cape, 1952. First Impression. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. A virtually flawless copy of the first UK edition of the author's second book, in the stunning red, white and black wraparound dust jacket, illustrated by Laterka and priced at 12s/6d. Very fine (and apparently unread) publisher's blue cloth stamped in bright silver on the spine and upper cover, in a Fine (a hint of rubbing to one end of the spine and the two front flap corners) pictorial dust jacket. Not uncommon, except in this superb condition. Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors' works (our specialty). Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. Barbary Shore

MAILER, Norman

NY: Rinehart. (1951). Mailer's second book. Like his first book, The Naked and the Dead, this title was published in black pseudo-cloth boards that rub remarkably easily, with a coarse paper dust jacket printed in black, which also tends to show wear. This is a near fine copy in a very good, price-clipped dust jacket, with fading to the title block on the spine, rubbing to the folds, and light edge chipping. The jacket is printed in black and red; there was also a black and green jacket, with no priority known. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine.
