About This Item

Rinehart & Co, 1951. First Edition, First Printing. Boards. Near Fine/Near Fine in Mylar Cover. A handsome First Edition, First Printing of Norman Mailer's second book, signed by the author on the front free endpaper. With an "R" in a circle on the copyright page indicative of a Rinehart first printing. The book is in near fine condition overall in an unusually nice cover with only touches of wear at the spine ends and natural age toning to the page edges. The dustjacket is complete with the original price ($3.00) and red & black designs but with lightening on the spine, wear at the creases and darkening at the edges of the front and rear white flaps. Mailer was award two Pulitzer Prizes for "Executioner's Song" and "Armies of the Night." Overall a nice copy in usually nice condition.

Synopsis

Barbary Shore is Norman Mailer's second published novel, written after Mailer's great success with his 1948 debut The Naked and the Dead. It concerns a protagonist who rents a room in a Brooklyn boarding house with the intention of writing a novel. Wounded during World War II, he is an amnesiac, and much of his past is a secret to himself. After Rinehart & Company published the novel in 1951, it received poor reviews and sold poorly.
