Pettoruti is considered to be a precursor to modern painting in Argentina. His work is related and is almost contemporary to that of the European movement, referring to maximums of cubism, futurismo and abstract painting. He opposed the impressionist characteristics and the prevailing regionalism in Buenos Aires of the period. Artist Luis Felipe Noé defined him as a classicist of the modernism, obsessed by order and the harmony. According to the critic Lopez Anaya, Pettoruti included/understood that everything was more conceptual than visual. The painting, according to its intentions, had to be construction and color.
