English Description: The sculptor Wilhelm Lehmbruck (1881-1919) is regarded as the pioneer of twentieth-century sculpture. But his pictures should not be underestimated either. For this reason, the present volume is dedicated to the work of Lehmbruck the painter. Alongside his sculptural and graphic work, Lehmbruck left a painterly uvre that, for all the times it has been exhibited, has remained almost unknown. This fundamental publication is based on the scholarly catalogue raisonn of the 79 pictures and their carefully researched collection history, including the Nazi period and the confiscations of the time. Lehmbruck's work as a painter is investigated sequentially, following the four stages of his life in Duesseldorf (1898-1910), Paris (1910-1914), Berlin (1914-1916), Zuerich and Berlin (1917-1919) in the context of his graphic and sculptural works.
