Buber-Neumann was a member of the German Communist Party who was arrested and sent to a labor camp in Siberia, then handed over to the Gestapo and held in the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Her experiences led her to become a staunch anti-Communist and she later became a member of the Congress for Cultural Freedom.
