Saving Whales Paperback - 2018

by Dennis Delaney

From the publisher

'SAVING WHALES' is the story of the meteoric rise of a brilliant, but naive college graduate looking for adventure, success and a way forward in the land of the powerful, rich, and famous. After his girlfriend leaves him, and his tennis career passes him by, Weston 'West' Walker dives head first into a world of activism, celebrity, sex, drugs, rock and roll, blind ambition, life-threatening situations, and the adventure of a lifetime.A bright spotlight on a specific group of people, at a specific, transitional time in American history, the late 70s, in the very specific location known as Hollywood, California. It's a story of lost and restless souls trying to find a way forward in a world that made less and less sense. The story of a group of dedicated adventurers who desperately needed to do something 'macro', to rage against the dimming of the light, to make a great splash before it was all over and NOTHING makes a bigger splash than the GREAT WHALES

About the author

DENNIS DELANEY is an American writer and actor, and former environmental activist who (in 1980) became the first National Director of Greenpeace USA. In May of 1978, he was arrested with Daniel Ellsberg and twelve others at the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Facility in Golden, Colorado. Their arrest for trespassing and civil disobedience resulted in a high-profile trial, and national media coverage of the life-threatening environmental disaster caused by the radioactive waste and plutonium contamination in the Denver, Colorado area. Later that summer, he joined the crew of the Greenpeace ship M.V. Peacock, as they non-violently confronted the Rusian whaling fleet in the South Pacific. While a Director of Greenpeace in Los Angeles, he joined forces in 1979 with The Alliance for Survival and the Abalone Alliance to protest the construction and opening of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant in San Luis Obispo, California. In 1980 he would move north to San Francisco, recruited by the chairman of Greenpeace International, David McTaggart, to be selected as the first National Director of Greenpeace USA. Saving Whales is his first novel.
