Description:
London: Royal Academy of Arts, 2017. Hardback. 336pp. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. First published on the occasion of the exhibition "Second Nature: The Art of Charles Tunnicliffe RA" at the Royal Academy. Charles Tunnicliffe is Britain's foremost twentieth-century wildlife artist. As an etcher, he came to prominence in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Many of his prints are informed by his experience of growing up on a Cheshire farm. His unsentimental representations of field labour and pig slaughter differ markedly from the nostalgic portrayals of rural England by contemporary etchers, whose pastoral vision was influenced by Samuel Palmer. Commercial success soon overshadowed Tunnicliffe's early recognition as a Royal College of Art trained printmaker. Since the mid 1930s, his pictures have been appreciated mainly at the second hand as illustrations for books, in advertisements, or as decorations on biscuit tins and collectable cards. Description:
Royal Academy Enterprises, 2017 A simply gorgeous catalogue raisonne from the Royal Academy London. Comprehensive and masterly. A farmer's son from Cheshire, British artist Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe (1901-79) won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in 1920. He went on to work in numerous mediums, his favored subject matter being Britain's native birds and other fauna, always depicted punctiliously and yet, unusually for the time, in their natural habitats. Renowned as the illustrator of the 1932 edition of Henry Williamson's Tarka the Otter and numerous Brooke Bond tea cards (popular collector's items in Britain in the postwar period), Tunnicliffe lived on the Welsh island of Anglesey for more than 30 years. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1954. This handsome catalogue raisonne of his prints, over 430 in number, includes lavish illustrations and authoritative annotations by the printmaking authorities Robert Meyrick and Harry Heuser. This is a NEW & UNREAD first… Read More
