Michael Havelin was born in 1944 and raised in Yonkers, New York. After high school, he moved to Albany, New York, where he started and ran a rock-and-roll band, The Bougalieu, which traveled to Florida and then returned to the Albany area. After four years, he quit rocking in 1968 to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology, earning A.A.S. and B.F.A. degrees in photography and filmmaking and learning sign language interpreting.



After several years working with a film company in Rochester, he moved to Florida where he worked as both an interpreter and a photographer. He attended law school at the University of Florida, earning a J.D. degree, and practiced law for several years in Palm Beach County before deciding that he wasn't suited to law. He moved to Washington, D.C., to work as an interpreter and to start a stock photography and publishing business.



In 1988, Havelin moved to Asheville, North Carolina, to pursue nature photography and publishing full time (Shooter's Ragand Dialed In!). After six enjoyable years in Asheville, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and he now lives in Austell, Georgia, where he works at writing and interpreting.
