"This story of an English family during the French Revolutionary, Napoleonic and Peninsular Wars and their aftermath centres upon the life of the Honourable George Cadogan. He was the younger son of Lord Cadogan and a great-grandson of Sir Robert Walpole as well as being descended by his mother, Mary Churchille, from the first Sir Winston Churchill. There seemed small chance of George inheriting the family titles and estates, as two elder half-brothers and an elder brother had prior claims, so he went aboard H.M. frigate Indefatigable as a twelve-year-old First Class Volunteer in December 1795 to fight the French. He saw action in the Atlantic, the North Sea and the West Indies, where he was captured by the French and came close to death at the hands of mutineers.
