Called the "Mother of Texas," Jane Wilkinson Long is brought to life in vivid detail in Jane Wilkinson Long: Texas Pioneer. One of the first Anglo women to settle in Texas, Jane possessed the intelligence, ingenuity, and inner strength to help her through the often-trying events of a settler's life.
Against the wishes of her family, Jane married Dr. James Long at the age of sixteen. Dr. Long dreamed of conquering "Tejas" and soon set off with an army. After Jane and her family rejoined him on the Bolivar Peninsula, Dr. Long left again, this time to conquer Mexico. After learning of her husband's death in Mexico City, Jane joined Stephen Austin and his settlers in the Austin colony, obtaining one of the few land grants given to women. She moved to Brazoria and opened an inn that became an important meeting place for the Texas Independence Movement. Stephen Austin, William Barret Travis, and Sam Houston all gathered at Jane's inn to discuss their plans for the revolution. Despite losing her inn during the Texas War for Independence, Jane rebuilt it and lived until the age of eighty-two.
