In 1945, Alex Colville, a young Canadian artist, was one of three painters admitted to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp as it was being liberated. He would later become on of Canada's most celebrated and influential painters. This stunning tribute showcases Alex Colville's paintings and prints from the last ten years. In his insightful text, Tom Smart places these works in the broad context of the artist's life work. Beginning with Colville's formations as an artist and his early influences and following four main themes--ordering, doubling, longing, and mortality, Smart suggests that the exacting naturalism and the sense of underlying danger in Colville's renderings of everyday life is his artistic response to the Holocaust, his way of imposing order on horrific chaos.
