This book explores the issues brought about by the reliance in recent decades on scientists to provide new information on health and environmental risks to policymakers in assisting them to make regulatory decisions. A new role has been created for scientists as a result of the increased demand for advisors to the government. As a result, the transition from basic research to research-on-demand has not always been smooth. On the basis of first-hand experience, the authors analyze and provide keys to improving the flow of scientific information into the policymaking arena through the selection of the 'right kind of people' to manage and translate the research. The book provides a list of criteria for selecting such managers and analysts. Co-published with Abt Books.
