From the publisher

The story of British Malaya, from the days of Victorian pioneers to the denouement of independence, is a momentous episode in Britain's colonial past. Through memoirs, letters and interviews, Margaret Shennan chronicles its halcyon years, the two World Wars, economic depression and diaspora, revealing the attitudes of the diverse quixotic characters of this now quite vanished world. The British came as fortune-seekers to exploit Asian trade shipped through Penang and Singapore. They found a mature Asian culture in a land of palm-fringed shores and primeval jungle. Like modern Romans, they built townships, defences, communications and hill stations, superimposed their law and established an idiosyncratic political system. They also developed the tin and rubber of the Malay States, encouraging Chinese and Indian immigrants by their open-door policy. The outcome was a vibrant multi-racial society - the most cosmopolitan in the East.

Description:
London: John Murray Publishers, 2004. Paperback. Very Good. Shennan, who grew up in British Malaya, doesn't set out to write a political history of the period, but rather of the British who lived there. Noel Coward's alledged description of Malaya as 'a first-rate country for a second-rate people' was a pretty fair reflection of British attitudes to commercial and colonial endeavours in the country for much of the period when the British were there. Through interviews with those who were still living and research into the writings of those who were not, the author makes a more sympathetic case than Coward for the British who, for better or ill, helped fashion the Malaysia of today. 426 pages divided into the following parts - I: The Building of British Malaya, 1880-1920, II - Golden Years, 1920-1940 & IIi: The Long Retreat, 1940-1960. There are maps, a glossary, notes, a bibliography and an index. Weight: 0.9.kg. * Post free within Malaysia. Tanning to the text block and minor cover wear. The… Read More
