New York: Rinehart & Company, 1948. First Edition. Original Wraps. Very Good. Advanced Review Copy in self wrappers. A Very Good copy of this scarce edition of Mailer's first novel. Book appears gently read, with concave spine and gentle rubbing to edges of the wraps. Faint odor and mild soiling to book, but no internal markings or major blemishes. Description:
First American Edition of the "Authorized Translation" by Nathan Haskell Dole, in the four-volume "Deluxe Binding": paper spine labels a bit rubbed, small previous owner's name on front end papers of each volume. A very good, clean, tight set. Scarce in any condition, but exceptionally so in this nice condition.
This translation is much more common in the four-volumes-bound-as-two format, which continued to be sold as late as 1900, as there are copies with tipped in leaves listing The Resurrection among the Tolstoy titles available. The first appearance of War And Peace in English--published by Vizetelly in England, and in a revised edition by Gottsberger in the US, both in 1886--was actually an abridged translation of a French translation of the Russian original. This is the first edition in English translated directly from the original Russian.

Foote's authoritative three-volume account of the American Civil War. Maps precede and follow text. ABOUT THE AUTHOR; Shelby Dade Foote, Jr. (November 17, 1916 – June 27, 2005) was an American historian and novelist who wrote The Civil War: A Narrative, a massive, three-volume history of the war. With geographic and cultural roots in the Mississippi Delta, Foote's life and writing paralleled the radical shift from the agrarian planter system of the Old South to the Civil Rights era of the New South. Foote was relatively unknown to the general public for most of his life until his appearance in Ken Burns's PBS documentary The Civil War in 1990, where he introduced a generation of Americans… Read More

Foote has the novelist's feeling for character and situation, without losing the historian's scrupulous regard for recorded fact."This is a 3-volume set. NO SLIPCASE. New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
