About This Item
Philadelphia: W. T. Purviance, 1867. Original albumen stereoview "Photographed and Published by W. T. Purviance, Philadelphia, Pa." One of a series of images published in the series, "The Scenery of the Pennsylvania Central Rail Road." William T. Purviance had a photography studio in Pittsburgh circa 1859-1860. In 1967 he was licensed as an official photographer for the Penn Central RR and apparently moved his studio to Philadelphia at that time. The image is of a photographer (Purviance?) seated on a rock facing higher on another rock. Provenance: from the collection of Robert N. Dennis, who was one of the most important stereoview collectors in the U. S. The New York Public Library's "Robert N. Dennis Collection" includes more than 70,000 stereoviews from his collection, many of which can be viewed on the library's website. The NYPL's collection includes another copy of this scarce view that was donated/sold to them by Dennis. All other online copies appear to be reproductions of that one. The stereoview offered here does have some staining, but it remains in good condition--please examine the scan.. First Edition. Stereoview. About Very Good. Illus. by W. T. Purviance. Photo.
