Hollywood, California: Metro Goldwyn Mayer, 1943. Gelatin silver print of the very young actor Roddy McDowell and the famous Collie Lassie in their roles in the film "Lassie Come Home.". This is an original movie still with the MGM stamp on the verso requesting credit for Clarence S. Bull and a publicity blurb headlined "A BOY AND HIS DOG." There also is a stamp on the verso of the New York City photo agency The Silver Screen. Clarence Bull (1896-1979) was the head of MGM's photography stills department for almost 4 decades. The legendary portrait photographer probably is best known as THE photograper of Greta Garbo, but hie was trusted as the primary photographer for most of MGM's stars. London: Fortescue Mann, 1896. David Simkin reports, "In a classified advert in an 1896 edition of The Photogram, Fortescue Mann was offering "Opaline Stereoscopic Slides", at 6d each, supplied from his shop at 48 Elgin Avenue, Paddington, London." Opaline stereoviews are albumen prints mounted on card stock and enclosed under a sheet of glass. Mann's opaline stereoscopic views were views of London, Seaside resorts, hop gardens, county life, river scenery, etc. Note: There is some debate over whether the London views by Fortescue Mann were taken by John Fortescue Mann (1848-1897) or by his son Reginald Fortescue Mann (1881-1916). David Simkin (Sussex Photo History) attributes them to the father while Douglas Heil (The Art of Stereography) attributes them to the son. Both acknowledge that the latter would have been quite a prodigy to have created these fine images at the age of 15 in 1896.. First Edition. Glass. Collectible-Very Good. Each image is of either a landmark Philadelphi building or one of the exhibition buildings for the American Centennial Exposition held in Philadelphia from May 10 to November 10, 1876. Decoration & lettering on cover are gilt. The view book is in about very goo condition: generally clean and tight; moderate sunning on covers; foreedge of covers has cloth worn through to boards; photos have a hint of light toning... New York: E. & H. T. Anthony & Co., 1885. viii, 768 pages. All 24 issues for the year bound (3/4 leather" together without the paper covers, but with a 7-page index. Eleven of the odd-numbered issues have a frontispiece that is an original photograph mounted on heavy stock. Among the original photographs are an albumen portrait of New York photographer and theosophist Henry J. Newton by Abraham Bogardus; an albumen portrait of photolithography pioneer Frederick Converse Beach by William Kurtz, using the artificial lighting technique that he pioneered; and an albumen print of the steam ferry "Thomas S. Brennan" by Henry J. Printed as a photogravure by the Photochrome Engraving Company, a company that Alfred Stieglitz had founded. Image size is 5 3/4 inches by 4 5/8 inches. Joseph T. Keiley (1860-1914) was a New York lawyer and amateur photographer who became one of the most significant members of the photo-secessionist movement. The soft-focus image of the "Arabian Nobleman" was one of three Keiley photogravures selected for inclusion in the February 1903 issue of Camera Notes. Baltimore, Maryland: Baltimore Sun, 1939. Original gelatin silver print, printed by Bodine in 1939. This is an original Baltimore Sun file/archive print. Date-stamped November 11, 1939 on the verso. margins trimmed to edge of image. Bodine returned to the Sparrow Point plant a number of times over the years to create some of his most striking images. The exhibition included 50 photographs illustrating Black labor in the united states from Reconstruction to 1980. Twelve of the photographs are pictured in the catalog. Sandown, Isle of Wight, England: J.Dore, 1894. 8 pages + 6 pages of supplementary views. No illustrations. James Dore (1854-1925) was a photographer in Sandown, Isle of Wight, England. He exhibited at the Royal Photographic Society and the Crystal Palace, and in 1893 he was awarded a gold medal and diploma for his lantern slides at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Unknown: Unpublished, 1908. Original (vernacular) team photograph of a 1908 baseball team. The image is 7 7/8" by 9 1/2" on a 10" by 12" mount. The name baseball team is as-yet unidentified except for the initials "CCA". However, on the verso of the mount are the last names and positions of the players--I do not know whether the order of the names corresponds in any way to the order of the seated players. The photograph has darkened some over the years, but the image is still quite clear. There are some relatively minor scratches. The photo is laid down on its original mount, which has suffered some water damage and chipping, but the photo itself has weathered the storm pretty well.. First Edition. Paper. Berg (1856-1926) was a New York architect and amateur photographer who became one of the founding members of the Camera Club of New York. Baltimore, Maryland: Baltimore Sun, 1952. Original gelatin silver print, printed by Bodine in 1952.  This is an original Baltimore Sun file/archive print.  Date-stamped October 19, 1952 on the verso.  Full margins that have the photographer's cropping marks for publication--the photograph has NOT been cropped.  Philip's Delight School was a one-room schoolhouse in rural Frederick County, Maryland.  Bodine took a series of photographs at the school, and this may well be the best example of his pictorial style from that series.  The image is 11" by 9" on a 14" by 11 1/4" sheet.  The photo is clean and bright; close examination reveals a number of short handling crease in the image, but only one of them shows just a tiny spot of chipping of the emulsion. Alfred Horsley Hinton (1863-1908) was an English landscape photographer who was an important figure in the pictorialist movement. He was a founding member of the Linked Ring and exhibited his photographs in both London and the United States. Alfred Stieglitz was so impressed with Hinton's work that he featured another Hinton photograph as the frontispiece in the very first issue of Camera Notes. René Le Bègue was a Parisian photographer who founded the Photo-Club de Paris and was the first French photographer elected to England's Linked Ring. Alfred Stieglitz recognized his talent when he included six of Le Bègue's photographs in his personal collection. The semi-nude portrait offered here is typical for Le Bègue, who almost exclusively photographed nude women. Madras, India: F. Dunsterville, 1890. Elias Frederick Evans Dunsterville (probably 1847-1908) exhibited for the Royal Photographic Society in 1896, and became a fellow in 1898. He worked for the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railways in India from 1878 until 1902. During that time he travelled extensively throughout India, taking many superb photographs. Provenance: from the collection of Robert N. Dennis, who was one of the most important stereoview collectors in the United States. The New York Public Library's "Robert N. Dennis Collection" includes more than 70,000 stereoviews from his collection, many of which can be viewed on the library's website. Please note that my scanner does not do well with glass stereoviews. Yarnall Abbott (1870-1938) was a Philadelphia lawyer who became a major pictorialist photographer. His work was included in the first Photo-Secession exhibtion in 1902, but he never became a member of the movement. Alfred Stieglitz was so impressed with the photogravure offered here that he republished it under the title "Sentinels" in CAMERA WORK in 1909.
