Through The Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There

Carroll, Lewis [Dodgson, Charles]

London: Macmillan & Co., 1877 Illustrated by John Tenniel. People's edition. Inscribed by Carroll to his child friend on the half title: "Marie Louise Butterfield, / from the author /May 26, 1896". Publisher's green cloth, with an illustration of Alice and Humpty Dumpty to the front board in red and black. Very good, with a slight lean and some toning to the spine, minor rubbing to the extremities, faint soiling to the otherwise fresh boards, light offsetting to the endpapers, a few illustrations hand colored with crayon, otherwise clean pages. A very sturdy and presentable copy, signed and inscribed by the author. Carroll inscribed this book to Marie-Louise Roosevelt Pierrepont (née Butterfield), noted artist and the 6th Countess Manvers and one of Lewis Carroll's child friends. Marie-Louise moved to Oxford at the age of six, and she met Carroll shortly thereafter. Indeed, he wrote in his diary on May 14, 1895, noting that he met a young girl named Marie Louise and that he gave her a copy of Alice's Adventures Underground. He later gave her this copy of Through the Looking-Glass at a friend's birthday party in 1896 when Marie-Louise was only seven years old - the same age as Alice Liddell when she inspired Carroll to write the Alice series. Through the Looking-Glass is Lewis Carroll's sequel to his popular children's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). In this story, which represents the child protagonist's journey from adolescence to adulthood, Alice ventures into a fantasy world through the mirror above her fireplace.. Illus. by Tenniel, John. Inscribed by Author. Hard Cover. Very Good.

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS AND WHAT ALICE FOUND THERE

Carroll, Lewis

MacMillan and Co. Limited, London, 1924. 6.25" X 4.25" in handsome red leather with fancy gilt cover and spine decoration. The front cover has a queen chess piece in gilt. Beautiful binding by Riviere and Son. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Some wear to top of spine, and spine itself seems slightly faded. Covers have a light white residue in the pores of the leather (looks to me as though someone tried to saddle soap or polish these covers). Nevertheless, the book is an absolute gem - gorgeous inside and out. 50 illustrations by Tenniel. 228pp + 1pp.(poem). 5th or later Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.

Through the Looking-glass and What Alice Found There

Carroll, Lewis

NY: Harper & Brothers. I was about to catalogue this as one of the nicest copies I'd seen, but I found a worm in the apple. One plate has a tear across the foredge and a few inches into the image, which is surprising as it is otherwise a lovely copy. This copy is not the white paper binding you usually see but a rich red cloth with gilt titles, and the cloth dustjacket is also the same cloth and gilt stamped. There are some spots on the rear cover of the binding which are noticeable only in reflected light. The top edge is gilt. It would be worth it to find a damaged or beaten copy in order to replace the plate. I was going to price it at $200 but because of the plate have dropped it considerably. . Very Good/fine. Cloth. 1902.
