MAILER, Norman.

San Francisco: City Lights Books,, 1957. Octavo. Original paper wrappers. Covers very lightly toned with a few tiny marks on front cover, else a very good copy. First separate issue, originally published in Dissent in the same year. Mailer's article "was by far the most extraordinary piece that appeared in Dissent" (Lennon, p. 233) and helped bring the journal to a greater prominence. Mailer argues that the American psyche has become conformist and terrorised, as a result of the holocaust and the nuclear age. It remains Mailer's best-known and most frequently reprinted essay.

The White Negro

Mailer, Norman

San Francisco, CA: City Lights Books, 1960. First Separate Edition, Second Printing. Stapled Wrappers. Near Fine. Norman Mailer's landmark influential essay, subtitled "Superficial Reflections on the Hipster" & originally published as an article in the journal "Dissent" in 1957. Also includes commentaries by Jean Malaquais & Ned Polsky, with Mailer's replies, in a section entitled "Communications: Reflections on Hipsterism" following the essay. This is the first edition, second printing, published by the iconic City Lights Books. The fifty-cent price referred to at lower right corner of front cover indicates that this is a second printing, the first printing has a thirty-five cent price; third & later printings refer to a seventy-five cent price (see Cook 26, pg. 28). This copy is signed & dated on the Title page: "James E. Perrizo/1964." Perrizo (1944-2006) became a devoted Beat collector & scholar during the 1980s-1990s, at one time serving as the assistant to Edie Parker, Jack Kerouac's first wife. The date of this signature, a few years after publication, marks this item as one of the earliest in his possession. A desirable Mailer collectible with significant provenance & association. In near-fine condition with only moderate rubbing, browning & light scratching to front, back covers & stapled spine; tiny bumps & lightest wear at corners & edges of same; vertical crease along spine edge; staples in process of rusting with miniscule bleeding. Interior very fine except for tiny bumps at corners of page leaves; small hand-paginating in pencil (presumably by Perrizo) at lower corners of same. Signed & dated (1964) by James Perrizo.
