About This Item

New York: Holiday House, 1990. First edition. Very good in very good plus dust jacket.. Signed first printing of this adaptation of the Arthurian tale of Sir Gareth of Orkney, the story of a young nobleman's path from the kitchen to knighthood to hero. Trina Schart Hyman, the NEW YORK TIMES notes, "illustrated an entire shelf of children's books and inspired many others who worked in the genre." Hyman illustrated over 150 books over her busy career, for which she earned a Caldecott Medal and three Caldecott Honors. In addition to her work for children's books, she served as an art director and staff artist for beloved children's magazine CRICKET from 1972-1979.
This retelling of Sir Gareth of Orkney, following King Arthur's nephew's quest for honor and love, nods to the conflicting endings of Mallory's and Tennyson's versions of the story by heavily implying that Gareth enters into a polyamorous relationship with both love interests. 9.5'' x 9.75''. Original cloth-backed boards. Original unclipped ($14.95) color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated in color. [16] leaves. Signed by Hyman to front flyleaf and half-title page. Jacket with mild edgewear, a hint of sunning to spine. Front board with a few spots of soil to lower edge. Interior clean and bright.
