A very good copy in the bright jacket that is lightly rubbed at the extremities with a few nicks and short closed splits. New York: Unpublished, 1919. William Joseph Schaldach (1896-1982) was a writer on art and outdoor sporting, editor for Field and Stream, and most notably an important American wildlife artist. The original watercolor offered here is one of his earliest works, probably done while he was studying at the Art Students League under John Sloan and George Bridgman. In addition to his signature ("W. J. Schaldach '19") at the lower right of the image, there also is included a piece of craft paper with the following written in pencil by the artist: "Central American Boa-Constrictor Study from live specimen. March 1919--W. J. Schaldach." The image is 3 inches by 7 1/4 inches and is matted 10 1/8" X 13" and shrink-wrapped. The watercolor study is clean and bright.. SIGNED. Original. Single Sheet. Overall condition is Very Good: primary condition issue is sun fade to front board and spine. Gutters showing front and back but all is holding together and only slightly tender. Interior is excellent. Gift inscription on half title dated 'Jan./99' along with prior bookseller's pencil note. Complete as issued with all blanks, 8 illustrations and folding map. This copy is distinguished by the scarce red brick binding. Almost all other first editions have the blue binding. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: True 1st UK editions are dated on title page 1898 by Smith, Elder & Co., London. Those without dates on title page are later issues. The 1st US edition is Appleton dated 1899 on title page. Red cloth front cover has a black border design, title in gold gilt outlined with black and also a large crab in gold gilt catching a shrimp, with text and illustrations that are bright with no rubbing. The rear board has a debossed flower design. All the board edges show slight edge wear with more along the bottom near the spine. The spine is also in gold gilt with black text but has a chip out of the back strip as well as cloth wear at the top and bottom. All corners are worn with bumping. Also, slight blemishes to the rear board. Spine has a slight slant but with not cracking to the decorative endpapers, although there is an approximate 2" tear in the fabric at the top of the rear gutter.
