Rendufe provides witty, energetic eyewitness accounts of military actions, debates in the Portuguese parliament, a society wedding, and much more. By 1829, when the first letter of this collection was written, Simão da Silva Ferraz de Lima e Castro (1795-1857), Barão de Rendufe, was a rising star in the Portuguese diplomatic corps due to his dramatic actions during the battles between liberals and absolutists. 1597 Cooking & Cuisine FEASTS Stucki Antiquitatum Convivialium Greek Ceremonies

Johann Wilhelm Stucki was a 16th-century Swiss historian and theologian who published an important treatise on the development and history of ancient ceremonies and banquets. 'Antiquitatum Convivialium' was a study on the art of banqueting and ultimately stated that ceremonies of all types were a necessary and significant part of all cultures. This work was so ground-breaking, that it was solely responsible for all other accounts written on the subject. Nicolas Popper states that
"Stucki devoted nearly four hundred folio leaves to the feasts of the ancient Hebrews, Greeks, and Latins."

Description:
1683 1ed James Ussher Power of Kings vs Church Ireland Charles II England RARE

"What is it which all men especially desire? Eternal life and happiness?" ¬
– James Ussher

James Ussher was an early 17th-century Archbishop in the Church of Ireland who is most remembered for giving an exact date to the beginning of creation. His full body of work includes letters, sermons, dissertations, and exegesis but this work focuses solely on improving the Christians life and strengthening their faith.

One of Ussher's lesser-known books was his 'Power Communicated by God to the Prince. This work, which was dedicated to Charles II of England, seeks to answer the question 'Where does a magistrates power come from - from Heaven or from Men?'. Ussher notes the church's inherent power over ecclesiastical governments, but also the conflicts that come from a power struggle between church and external governments.

This first 1683 first edition is exceedingly rare and valuable. It was one of the important Ussher… Read More

One of only 25 copies published in folio size with hand-coloured etchings on papier de Hollande
According to the publisher's catalog, this edition comprised "200 exemplaires sur papier de Hollande au format in-folio, dont 25 avec les planches coloriées."
The etchings by A. Guillaumot Fils (Auguste Etienne Guillaumot Jr.) were made from theatrical costume designs by Eugene Lacoste and Draner for productions of the comic opera Les Merveilleuses (The Lady Dandies) (1873) by Sardou. The costumes were based on contemporary prints from the Revolutionary era.
Second edition with 30 plates plus portrait, following the first with only 20 plates in 1874. The Merveilleuses is set in Revolutionary France during the period of the Directoire, 1789-1804, where Royalist Parisian society is led by the Incroyables and Muscadins, ridiculous fops and dandies, and Merveilleuses, outrageous women wearing classical Roman- and Greek-inspired robes in see-through fabrics. Engraved portrait of Sardou (by Guillaumot Sr.) as… Read More

1723 History of Netherlands 1ed Holland Voyages MAP Dutch MEDALS COINS Utrecht
Jean Le Clerc's "History of the Netherlands" is considered one of the best 18th-century sources on the political and militaristic history of the numerous states of Holland. Le Clerc describes a year-by-year chronology of major events in the Netherlands, complete with impressive folding maps and engravings. Much to be desired, Clerc utilizes a world map that depicts California as a large island off the west coast of the North America.
This set also features a first edition printing of Le Clerc's 'Historical Explanation of the Medals of the Netherlands'. First published in 1723, this work is a detailed account of the origins of the Dutch republic with descriptions of major events and figures from throughout the 16th-century until the Treaty of Utrecht and the end of the Spanish Succession... And while the contents are accurate and thorough, the main draw of this work is the inclusion of over 100 engravings of coins, medals,… Read More

Description:
1662 King Charles I 1st FOLIO ed Eikon Basilike England Martyr English Civil War

I would rather choose to wear a crown of thorns with my Saviour, than to exchange that of gold, which is due to me, for one of lead, whose embased flexibleness shall be forced to bend and comply to the various and oft contrary dictates of any factions, when instead of reason and public concernments they obtrude nothing but what makes for the interest of parties, and flows from the partialities of private wills and passions. I know no resolutions more worthy a Christian king, than to prefer his conscience before his kingdoms.
– King Charles I, England, Eikon Basilike

A first edition printing of the works of Charles I, King of England. "A few hours after the King's execution, his Eikon Basilike was in the hands of the people." This book is collectively a set of meditations during the King's imprisonment and consisted of many of the government's problems and corruption. (Almack, 3). According to Kunitz and Kaycraft,… Read More
