In the "Just Plain Weird" category, consider the man who from about 1925 on baffled the medical and scientific community with his ability to GROW. That's right, this famed sideshow performer appeared to grow inches taller on stage -- hence his nickname, "The Man Who Grows Before Your Eyes." Through the 1950s, Willard continued to amaze and confound, appearing on shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show" (6 April 1958). What he signs here is as off-the-wall as what he did: a folded-down promotional broadside, single sheet (printed recto and verso), 27" X 18¼" (folds down to 9" X 6 3/4"), Grand Rapids, MI, n.y. [ca. 1934 or earlier]. Near fine. Collection from family trip in 1952 includes original letter from Cunard Line Agents' Bulletin C-16 dated 6/14/52 in very good condition. Two brochures from the Caronia, one artist signature is G.H. Iavis. One book printed in England, one is printed in U.S.A. and the letter is from New York. Minor scratches and wear for the age and the First Class tag for the Cunard White Star Limited to Southampton, First Section is intact with the oriingal string. 1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

Stratford, Ont: McLagan Furniture Co, 1915. Paperback. Very Good -. [1], 31 leaves: illustrations; 31 x 45 cm. Brown card covers with gilt embossed cover title; stapled. No date of publication. George McLagan established his furniture business in Stratford, Ontario, in 1905. This catalog features suites for the dining room and bedroom, and funiture for the hall, parlor, living room, study, and office. Allthough 4 "record cabinets" are included, no photograph cabinets are shown, which were introduced by McLagan in 1916. Scarce. In Very Good- Condition: cover is lightly rubbed and soiled; creasing and minor loss at corners; closed 6-cm. tear from lower edge of back cover; 3 closed tears of 2 cm. or less from upper and lower edges of front cover; light soiling of upper corner on some leaves; otherwise, clean and solid.

Original First Edition. 16 page sewn paper pamphlet in wrappers, minor discoloration to edges of covers, old $2 price, and old library call numbers written in pencil on top of front cover, old 15 cent price, and calculation figures not related to text written in pencil on back cover, contents clean and unaffected.

In this pamphlet, Judge Leavitt states his reasons (based on historical fact and the Constitution) for his ruling that denied a writ of habeas corpus for the defendant C. L. Vallandigham; leader of the "Peace Democrats," and Supreme Commander of the "Sons of Liberty."

The accused was charged with "mischievous disloyalty" in his opinions and statements; and subsequently arrested at the orders of General Burnside. Lincoln became involved when, in May of 1863, he wrote to Stanton stating that suspension of habeas corpus, as Stanton wanted, would not be necessary in this case.

On the left, one clean tear of ~3 inches, may be mended. Some light chipping to ink at edges and similar light edge wear. "On August 11, 1984, President Ronald Reagan was preparing for his weekly radio address on National Public Radio. During a soundcheck he said, 'My fellow Americans I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that would outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.' The audio was subsequently leaked. Despite making a joke about nuclear genocide, Reagan was reelected by a landslide a few months later."—Exhibition Annotation: Center for the Study of Political Graphics. Worldcat.org finds one copy at the University of Michigan and one at MoMA and none in trade. All posters are presently stored between acid free boards, flat, under weight. They will be shipped rolled, in tubes.

Salem, N.C.: Gedruckt bey Blum und Sohn, 1849. First Edition First Printing . Soft cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 8 pages. Bound in printed wrappers (the title page is the front cover) and housed in a 20th century stapled cardboard folder, secured very tightly in the binding with black cloth-tape. The paper is browned and has some wear or pest damage at the corner of the front cover and the following leaf. The translation into English is, "Report of the Evan's Activities. Tennessee Lutheran Synod, during its Ninth and Twentieth Session, held at the Becks Church, Davidson County, N.C. From October 20th to 23rd, 1849." Rare. Worldcat lists other reports from the Evangelical Lutheran Church that were printed in Salem, N.C. in the 1820s to the 1840s, but we have not found a copy of this report listed.

Small quarto (9 1/4 by 6 inches) Hanford Stationery and Printing Company, 1886. Original First Edition. 72 pages, large foldout map (18 1/2 by 24 inches) attached to back wrapper, bound in original sewn wrappers, very good condition.

Written before Washington became a State, the author describes "Some of the reasons qualifying this Territory for early admission into the Union . . . . " using population figures, and a summary of information relating to 34 counties.

He covers Railroads, Mineral Resources, Indians, "Fishes and Other Marine Food Products of Puget Sound," as part of his report.

Squire was an American Civil War veteran, twelfth governor of Washington Territory, and eventually a United States Senator from the State of Washington.
