Ex library w/ inkstamps on top & bottom of text block, 7 digit stamped no. in bottom right corner of half-title page- no other library marks. Binding of black paper over board covers & white cloth spine is Good+: square & shows only light rubbing, 2 small bumped & frayed cover corners at top right. Spine just a bit tanned, all lettering crisp & intact. Copy actually displays well. Fixed endpapers have remains of side edges of DJ glued to them (basically white on white). Crude & light printing, ""Honesty Pays Big"" (to me, kind of adds to copy) in gray semi-indelible pencil (I think) at top of front free endpaper. NO publ. date- appears to be early or 1st Brentano's printing (there were supposedly three undated Brentano's editions, all of which were issued prior to 1901). Dark yellow cloth binding w/ extensive color floral motif on both covers, black lettering on front & spine; 39 pages + printer's statement- all printed on 1 side only; top edge of text block gilt (still bright), side edge rough-cut; 6.25 x 4""; red & black lettering on title page. Binding: tight, bright & clean covers w/ vibrant colors; very small corner bows, slight spine discolor (lettering totaly intact & readable). Old pictorial (etching of temple?) lawyer/owner bookplate (5"" x 3""), dated 1914, inside front cover. Bookplate also appears to be pencil signed in bottom margin ""Antonio Barone '14"". SIGNED & inscribed in red pencil ""For Bird From Dwig"" by book's illustrator ""Dwig""- on front fixed endpaper. Looks like he also shaded in parts of that page's illustration w/ other colored pencils- a nice personal touch. DJ Fair- would be Good except for large triangular chip (5"" x 4.5"" x 4.5"") extending down from top of blank BACK panel- otherwise light chipping & sm. closed tears at edges, light soil & spine discolor. Navy blue cloth binding tight & square; minor rubbing, trace of soil, convex bow to covers, 1/4"" corner bumps at top of each cover. Gold gilt vignette on front & all gold spine lettering crisp & intact. No fray or spine discolor. Text block tight to binding; narrow spine gap prior to title page (not really a split- minor). Neatly penned sm. owner name, dated Dec. 25, '88 w/ ""Univ. of Pa"" in top corner of title page- assume 1888- in fountain pen & looks old. Text is tight, clean, unmarked w/ v. light toning. C. 1934 by author; First Little Brown Edition, published 1944 (same year on title page) & stated 2nd printing- August, 1944 (1st was June, 1944). Red pictorial DJ (w/ rider & hounds) is Good+ to VG; bright w/ light rubbing & soil on rear panel, minor edge wear (incl. small closed tears & chips- 1/8 to 3/8""); 1"" tear at top of rear panel & just a hint of sun to spine. Book is VG+. Red cloth binding is tight, bright & clean; maybe a hint of rubbing. All black cover & spine lettering, & horse & rider on front are crisp & intact. NO bumps, scuffs or frays to binding. Tight, clean, unmarked text w/ just a bit of toning. NO owner names, hinge splits, etc.; NOT ex library. Handsome, well preserved copy- both book & DJ display very well. Uncommon edition.
