NP. ND. c. 1898. Set of 11 full page illustrations by Beardsley Sewn in pale blue/grey card wrapper. No text apart from the front wrapper.(8.4 x 5.4 inches). Mark Samuels Lasner, in his checklist of Beardsley's work, describes a set of these illustrations as being issued as loose plates in blue wrappers (5a) but this copy is the 11 etchings printed on the recto of white paper leaves and sewn into the card wraps. A couple of spots to the edge of the first couple of leaves, away from the illustration, otherwise a clean and bright example in very good wrappers with a small amount of marking and handling to the edges. Overall a better than very good example of this rare item.

Thorius (d. 1625) was born in France and received his medical training in Holland and England, where he later practiced. The Hymnus tabaci was written prior to 1610 and circulated widely in manuscript before its first publication. Ribeiro de Sampaio (1741–ca. 1812) was Ouvidor and Intendente Geral of this area, and in this diary of his trip through it, gives details on its geography, hydrography, natural history, and civil and political history. he Sole UK printing published by B.H. Blackwell, Oxford in 1919. The BOOK is in Very God++ or better condition. Mild splaying of the upper board. The boards are clean and the gilt titling remains bright. Very light toning to the text-block and extreme page edges. Two previous owners neat penned names, one to the front free end paper and the other to the front paste-down. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition with only a small amount of wear to the spine ends. The spine is mildly toned with a little light rubbing in places. The illustrated wrapper design by 'M.T.' looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The wrapper artwork depicts tombstones in a graveyard with prominent Minister s names on them and a worm underneath the title. Some light foxing throughout but still a very good copy of this beautiful book in an attractive leather binding. Rackham at his very best.

First UK edition, first impression. Published in the same year as the first US edition and seemingly less common with striking cover art. Publisher's original black cloth with silver lettering to spine and motif to bottom corner of upper board. Light spotting to top edge and some off-setting to endpapers with a previous owner name to front endpaper and a few ticks in red biro next to some of the titles listed on half-title verso, otherwise very good. The original dust jacket is price-clipped and has some wear and a few tears to top edge with some rubbing and chipping to spine panel, primarily to the top. A good or better copy of an uncommon edition.

A wonderful interleaved copy of this work, with 40 original water colour illustrations by Draner (prolific caricaturist and illustrator, real name Jules Jean Georges Renard). Also bound in are two letters from Renard to the publisher. It appears that this edition remained unpublished, as there are no references to it in bibliographies. (There is an edition of the work published by the Librairie Illustrée in 1888, but this is not illustrated and is apparently 299 pages). Satire of late 19th century French government administration and politics, containing charming original watercolour drawings of various scenes. Bound in are two letters by Renard (dated "2 Novembre 93" and "9 Août 94"), referencing his work: "Je vous fais remettre le volume en même temps que les dessins et [...] croquis" and "Voici enfin les aquarelles du Pontax ainsi que les trois titres que vous aviez demandé. Comprised in seven books) is dated 1656 and gives Abel Roper of Fleet Street as publisher. Some pagination errors but complete and this copy with six illustrations not called for, bound in at a later date. Some staining and toning to many pages. Title page with 2 previous owners names and addresses written in ink.
