Description:
[Ogden], 1950. Oil on board [61 cm x 77 cm] in a nice custom frame [69 cm x 85 cm] signed at the foot near the center in red. Bright painting from the notoriously reclusive artist. Image depicts a bar scene showing a sailor, woman and a bald man laughing and smiling. The sailor is likely a reference to the time Rosenbaum spent in Guadalcanal during World War II. David Howell Rosenbaum (1908-1982) was born in Brigham City and was part of the Logan group of artists who studied with Calvin Fletcher at the Utah State Agriculture College (USU) in 1931. During the Great Depression, he worked for the WPA Federal Art Project, painting many of his best-known works. In 1938, Rosenbaum moved to New York City to attend the Art Students League. Rosenbaum joined the navy at the start of the United States involvement in World War II. During his service in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal, he drew many scenes and made several small watercolor paintings. He arrived home again sometime after the war, and was a… Read More

Description:
New York: C.H. Webb, 1867. First Edition. 198pp. Duodecimo [17.5] Beveled brown boards with the title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. A jumping frog is gilt stamped on the front board and blind stamped on the rear board. Contemporary inscription on the tipped in front free endsheet with advertisement on the verso. Discreetly rebacked with the original backstrip laid over. First edition with unbroken type on pages 21, 61 and 198 and the inserted advertisement at the front. Perhaps no short sketch of Twain's so quickly won wide popularity as did 'The Jumping Frog.' Calaveras County, California, is known to thousands who have never seen the Golden State simply because of this gem of humor. This little volume, the author's first published book, came into being under the sponsorship of Charles Henry Webb - who also edited it under his pseudonym of 'John Paul.' To accompany 'The Jumping Frog' he chose twenty-six other sketches. Zamorano Eighty: 17. Wheat Books 43. Cowan p.49. BAL 3310.

Roland W. Reed (1864-1934) was a photographer working in the American west, who was largely self-funded in his effort to document the vanishing indigenous peoples he encountered and sought out. Many of his images were staged to offer romanticized depictions of these people as he wanted to see them. Reed lived with and photographed the Ojibwe in Minnesota; the Blackfeet, Piegan, Flathead, Cheyenne, and Blood in northern Montana and southern Canada; and the Navajo and Hopi in Arizona. [Salt Lake City, 1909. 45 silver gelatin photographs. [10 cm x 15 cm] / [4" x 6"] Attached to lined index cards [13 cm x 20 cm] / [5" x 8"] that have typed identifications and notations. Views have strong contrasts. Nice views of Betatakin that is located in northern Arizona and is now part of Navajo National Monument. Betatakin is one of the three great pre-historic cliff dwellings that are now part of Navajo National Monument in northern Arizona; the other two are the nearby Keet Seel and Inscription House. The House Built on a Ledge occupies an enormous, south-facing alcove, 452 feet high and 370 feet across with its own freshwater spring. Betatakin was built about 1260-1270 A.D. with about 120 separate rooms. Spectacular cliff-dwelling that is, Betatakin was nevertheless short-lived and was abandoned ca. 1300 A.D., a time when many other occupation sites through much of the Southwest were also abandoned. Dr. Byron Cummings (1860-1954) was a professor of Latin and English at the University of… Read More

[San Francisco]: Printed at the San Francisco Herald Office, 1855. First English Language Edition. 105pp. Octavo [22 cm] Yellow printed wrappers. Better than very good. Gentle overall wear with minor sporadic foxing to the textblock. Exceedingly rare in original wrappers. First edition in English of the first important book printed in California. Jose Figueroa had been governor of Alta California since 1827. In September, 1834, Hijars and Padres arrived in Monterey as directors of a Mexican colonization project; they expected to take over the mission lands which had been secularized by the Mexican Government in 1833, as well as to assume the governorship and other offices. Figueroa refused to comply with their demands and composed his 'Manifesto a la republica Mejicana' to recount his side of the dispute and explain his own plans for secularization and colonization. Even as Zamorano was printing the book, Figueroa died in September, 1835. Inscribed on the dedication page in pencil: "To Saml. H.… Read More

Complete run of the groundbreaking BYU student newspaper, that includes the 'Best of Issue' and the two printed copies of the (watered down) follow-up, University Post. Maxine Hanks and Gary Bergera were co-founding staff members, with Hanks writing the 'Thrills' arts and entertainment feature and Bergera writing the 'Grey Matters' column on theological issues. In an attempt to show both sides of issues, the paper became controversial and was eventually banned from being sold on the Brigham Young University campus, after an interview with Sterling McMurrin (Year 2, Issue 4) where he stated that he did… Read More

Salt Lake City: The University of Utah Press, 1935. First Edition. 23pp. Octavo [25 cm] Gray printed wrappers. Near fine. Cancelled check signed by Wallace Stegner laid in. Stegner's rare first printed is a condensed version of his thesis, on the noted geologist, Clarence E. Dutton (1841-1912). This copy was acquired directly from the Stegner family. Wallace Earle Stegner (1909-1993) was an American novelist, short story writer, environmentalist, and historian, often called 'The Dean of Western Writers'. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 and the U.S. National Book Award in 1977, and through his writing program at Stanford University, influenced generations of writers (Edward Abbey, Ken Kesey, Wendell Berry, Larry McMurtry). Colberg A1. "Considering the most obscure of the men who made up the first group of the United States Geological Survey, Wallace E. Claremont, NH, 1880. First Edition. 239pp. Duodecimo [17 cm] 3/4 brown morocco over matching cloth boards with the title gilt stamped on the front board. Marbled endsheets and pastedowns. Better than very good. Faint and gentle rubbing to a few places at the extremities. This skecth contains an account of the early years of W.B. Ide, recollections by his daughter of the family's trip across the plains to California in 1845, and an account of the Bear Flag revolt of 1846 as told by Ide to his brother in 1849, and in a letter to a Senator Wambough which, as Ide died in 1852, must have been written within a few years of the event. This work is also important in that it is one of the few overland journals written from the point of view of a woman, and is unique in its exclusive treatment of the Bear Flag Revolt. William Ide was leader of the Bear Flag movement of Sonoma, and has been referred to as the 'President' of California. Cowan II p.118. Eberstadt 105: 136. Graff 2059. Howes I4. Mintz 250.… Read More

Hildburghausen, GER: Stich, Druck und Verlag der Geographischen Anstalt des Bibliographischen Instituts, 1850. Map [29 cm x 35.5 cm] / [11" x 14"] on a single sheet [35 cm x 43 cm] / [13.5" x 17"] Hand tinted borders to Mexican states. A few short closed tears at the head in the margin (does not effect map). Rare map, that locates the shortly lived 'State of Deseret' which Brigham Young proposed in the spring of 1849. This provisional state was never recognized by the United States government, but was still located by a handful of European map makers, who wanted to provide in their mind, the most accurate map and to put it in the hands of the public at large, but specifically those who wanted to take to the Mormon, Oregon & California trails and settle in the then largely uninhabited western U.S. The dream of the State of Deseret ended in the fall of 1850, with the establishment of the Territory of Utah. Salt Lake City is located at its present location and named 'Mormonfort. Not in Moffat. Not in Wheat.
