Coethen,: F.A. Estockel,, 1860.. [viii], xcvi, 656, 235 (Repertorium & index), [iii] pp. Small 8vo. (11.5 x 17.5 cm.). Contemporary green cloth, spine with gilt rullers and gilt lettered. The very rare first edition. Lutze was a controversial figure in Homeopathy with an enormous influence among the layman. This very contraversional book is a fundament in the history of Homeopathy. --(Partly some light stains and/or foxing, but a very good copy).

Paris,: Chez Vincent,, 1770.. [ii blank], viii, 256 pp. 12mo (8,5 x 14,5 cm.). Contemporary marbled calf, spine with red morocco, gilt lettered, label, in compartments gilt decorated with fleurons (joints slightly worn with a small crack), edges of sides with gilt ruler; edges red.. With 12 figures in the style of Ryff on 2 folded engraved plates. Raulin first doctor at Nérac (Guyenne) moved to Paris where he became physician to Louis XVI. He was a prolific author of both theoretical and practical works. The present work, written in a very comprehensive languages, was written by order of the French Government who was alarmed by the fatal results in childbirth caused by inexperienced country practitioner. This second edition was published in the same year as the first edition (who had only 168 pp.). This work was translated into Dutch, German and Portuguese. Contemporary marbled calf, spine with raised bands and in compartments gilt (top & bottom of spine slightly damaged; hinges slightly worn, but firm; corners a bit bumped; title shield gone). With an engraved title vignet and some headings. ¶ The last part has a separate title page: CLARIUS ET MAJUS LUMEN PHARMACOPAEORUM Dat is een claerder en meerder licht der Apothekers. Alwaer wordt voor gestelt eene sekere maniere, hoe dat eenige Medicynen moeten bereyt gemaeckt worden, soo Galenicé, als Chimicé, alles met redenen bewesen dienende tot onderwysinge van de Leerlingen. Contemporary marbled calf, spine with 5 raised bands; in compartments gilt decorated with floral motives (top of front joint slightly damaged; marbled end-papers, red edges. With several woodcut headers, footers and initials. BMN. I, 200.First edition, very rare. A considerably expanded edition of author's thesis (Leiden, 1762). Rouppe travelled much in the West-Indies as a naval physician for the Dutch West Indische Companie. The text is based on author's own observations and experiences, including sanitation and sanitary measures, venereal diseases, fevers, cancers etc. An important part (pp. 90-212) deals with scurvy. One of the last parts, "de morbus in portubus" is of particularly interest. Contemporary half dark brown calf, spine richly gilt decorated "á la grotesque", gilt lettered red Morocco label (small tear [ca. 3 cm.] in the gutter of the front side). A nice copy of the first edition of both works. There are 4 later editions, the last in 1805. The author, "ancien chirurgien-major de la Marine" was a great advocate of catheterisation. According to a contemporary review, the work on urology has some interesting point of views, but written in a horible style. In both work Guérin strongly oposite quackery and urge the public not to deal with charlatans. Rare. Hirsch II, 688; Dezeimeris II/1, 656; Wellcome III, 175.

Lugduni (Lyon),: Joannem Certe,, 1686. [xii], 413, [xxxiii] pp. Small 8vo (9,3 x 15,3 cm.). Contemporary brown calf (top and bottom of spine slightly damaged; upper edge of the front side slightly rubbed; corners a bit bumped), Spine in compartments gilt decorated and lettered; speckled edges. Seme wood-engraved head and tail pieces. With a contemporary engraved bookplate of Ludovicus Feuilherade M.D. ¶ Apparently the ONLY copy known of this 1686 Johannem Certe edition. The official "Editio secunda" was published by Certe in 1687. Presumably the 1686 edition was printed at the occasion of Tencke's inauguration at Montpellier in 1686, but the printer overlooked to print the King's approbation within this 1686 edition. Certe has to cancel the edition and released a little bid later (1687) the correct edition with the approbation. The 1686 editions: Montpellier Peronnel & Venice de Rhinetta, are pirate editions. No copy in the BNF or NLM, nor in the World Cat.

Paris,: J.B. Ballière,, 1872.. xii, 1120 pp. 8vo (14,5 x 23 cm.). Contemporary half olive morocco (rubbed & faded), spine gilt lettered. With 1 folded, partly, coloured, plate, 2 plain plates, and 255 fine wood engravings in the text. Garrison & Morton, 4543. Best edition of Duchenne's first major work. Including on page 357 the first description of partial brachial plexus paralysis, upper type, (Duchenne-Erb's palsy). According to its author, this edition is "almost a new book", and contains nearly 200 more pages of text, and 151 more illustrations than the first edition. With a list of Duchenne's publications, and a valuable illustrated description of numerous inductoria. Duchenne, one of the greatest clinicians of the nineteenth century and one of the greatest neurologists of France, employed induced current in the treatment of paralysis and other nervous disorders. With a title-vignet, 2 woodcut headers and 1 cul-de-lampe The impression reads MDCLXXXVIII (1688) but that is typo error as The Hôpital des Pauvres Paralytiques - Incurables de Marseille was founded in 1700. The actual date of publication was 1753. Very rare, no records found in any library, including the NLM, BN-Opal, WorldCat, B.M., etc.

Contemporary half brown calf, spine gilt decorated with rulers and buttons, gilt lettered on orange morocco label, marbled boards, marbled edges. A rare and early detailed monograph on the subject. --(A few pages with some light damp staining and/or some foxing, but a very good copy).

A charming contemporary binding: full marbled calf, remnants of gilt rullers on sides, spine in compartments gilt decorated, red morocco title-label, gilt dotted ruller at the outer and inner edges of the sides, gilt edges. With a fine frontispiece engraved by B.J. Prévost, Bardou's printer's mark op title, several fine engraved headings and footers Very finely printed by Bardou, one of the limited issues of his series "Collections d'Auteurs Latin" printed on "Papier Bleuté". A famous neo-Latin poem in the style of Virgil's "Georgica". First published at Paris in 1665, and followed by many later edition and translations. The present edition is concluded by Brotier's (1732-1789) remarks on Rapin's poem and a history of the classical garden.

Paris,: Martin & George Jouvenel,, 1705.. [xxiv], 180, [iv] pp. 12mo (9,3 x 15 cm.). Contemporary full calf, spine with 5 raised bands, in compartments gilt, gilt lettered on red morocco label (gilt is faintly; top and bottom of spine with some slight loss of leather; sorners slightly rubbed; joints a little worn), red edges. ¶ Very rare. Second enlarged French edition (first is 1689) of Talbor's "The English Remedy" (1682). Talbor, an untrained "quack" was instrumental to popularize the use of cinchona in Europe. He made a fortune by curing hundreds of royal and aristocatic persons, including Louisa Maria, Queen of Spain, Prince de Condé, Duc de Roche-Foucauld, Charles II, Louis XIV, etc. An attractive copy, despite the somewhat worn binding, inner bright an clean.

Parisiis,: Apud Guillelmum Cavelier,, MDCC.XXIII. [1723].. [ii blank], [xii], 352, [x], [x] pp. Small 8vo (10 x 16,5 cm.). Contemporary full marbled calf, spine with raised bands and in compartments gilt decorated with floral design; contemporary marbled end-papers; speckled edges (corners very slightly bumped and worn; hinges show some light traces of use, but a solid and attractive binding). With a few woodcut figures in the text. ¶ Lindeboom 315. First published at Leiden in 1917, this is the first edition printed in France but without Boerhaave's consent (all Cavelier Boerhaave imprints are pirate editions). "One of Boerhaave's pupils published an adaptation of his "Libellus de materie medica", greatly amplified from the lectures of his master. The succes of this spurious edition, followed by many reprints, show clearly how much Boerhaave's teaching on the medical treatement of diseases was valued" (Lindeboom p. 59). With one fine engraved frontispiece. ¶ This edition is very rare. Contains i.a. Von der Cholera - Sanguine - Phlegmate - Cholerico - Melancholicis, etc. --(As usual with German books from this period, pages light browned throughout the volume; though a attractive copy in a charming contemporary binding).

Contemporary half green grained morocco; spine with 5 raised bands, gilt lettered, in compartments gilt decorated with floral motive; hand made marbled boards and marbled end-papers; top edges gilt; original printed wrapper bound in; preserved in a matching slipcase. With a coloured frontispice and one coloured plate (in chromolithography), and 100 fine plates in helio-engraving. Title printed in red and black. ¶ Henry Martin's last work. A superb, and finely bound large paper copy, being one of the 25 copies printed on "papier d'Arches à la cuve". There are only a few copies with the second coloured plate. Including a bibliography of Henry Martin's publications. A very fine faultless 'de luxe' copy.

Contemporary half green grained morocco; spine with 5 raised bands, gilt lettered, in compartments gilt decorated with floral motive; hand made marbled boards and marbled end-papers; top edges gilt; original printed wrapper bound in; preserved in a matching slipcase. With 103 fine plates in helio-engraving, depicting 153 miniatures. Title printed in red and black. ¶ A superb, and finely bound large paper copy, being one of the 25 copies printed on "papier à la cuve des Papeteries d'Arches". A very fine faultless 'de luxe' copy. Durrieu, “seigneur de l’histoire de l’art médiéval” was one of the greatest illuminated manuscripts specialist, who wrote many standard works in that field.
