Condition: The Book LACKS a front cover board, and the back cover is barely attached but present. The book is in very good condition, all the prints and tales are present and in VG condition, the binding and spine are holding.

I. Riley and Co, New York, 1806. Volumes 1 & 2 (of 3) Hardcover in the original calfskin binding with leather spine labels (titles in gilt largely faded.) "Translated by an American Gentleman," Washington Irving, and this happens to be his first book. Illustrated with a large (26-1/2" x 17-3/4") folded map in the first volume - the map has been repaired (please see photos) in the upper right hands corner. The binding is sound on these antique books - the pages are age toned but in good condition, with foxing heavier in Vol 2 (particularly at the front of the book) than 1. The boards of Vol. 2 are slightly bowed and there's a fair amount of quill pen names and notes in the front and back of that volume.

Berlin, Paul Parey, 1894. 25x17cm. Hardcover. With 104 chromolithographed plates - each with 1 page of text in German, and 1 blank sheet for notes. The text is in German, in gothic style font, including the info about the fruit varieties and the advertisements in the back.
About the plate illustrations:The beautiful color plates were printed in the Lithographic Institute of W. Müller in Gera, who also made the master drawings. 53 apple and 51 pear varieties are illustrated and described with 1 to 3 whole fruits and 1 slice view.
Condition: The plates are bright and gorgeous and in excellent condition, without foxing or tears and suitable for framing. The cover has some fading and light staining commensurate with the age of the book.

Illustrated and in excellent condition given its age. unmarked, bright gilt on the cover strong and square. About the book: Ragnarok: The Age of Fire and Gravel is a book by Minnesota congressman Ignatius L. Donnelly published first in 1883. This is the first edition. Donnelly argues that an enormous comet hit the earth 12,000 years ago, resulting in widespread fires, floods, poisonous gases, and unusually vicious and prolonged winters. The catastrophe destroyed a more advanced civilization, forcing its terrified population to seek shelter in caves. As cave-dwellers, they lost all knowledge of art, literature, music, philosophy, and engineering.

First state of text with "seep" for the word "sleep" on page 209. In excellent unmarked condition, straight and square, w/o the jacket. The author's last novel, an enjoyable mystery dedicated to his wife, playwright Lillian Hellman. It was also the basis for the classic movie with William Powell and Myrna Loy.

The book itself is in excellent unmarked condition - The jacket (see photos) is very worn, fragile and in two pieces.About the book: Considered one of the fathers of twentieth-century environmental activity, John Muir's appeal to modern readers is that he not only explored the American West but also fought for its preservation.
