Rare books from Well Done Books and Papers

New York: Armed Services Editions, 1943. Special Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. Armed Services edition D-117, first edition thus, wrappers. Some wear and toning to covers and pages, but complete and in very good condition for its age and the fact it was made to be carried by soldiers during wartime. This title was so popular, it was reissued later in the series as ASE K-28. Published during WWII by the Council on Books in Wartime and distributed to GIs, Armed Services Editions were part of the U.S. military effort to fight against propaganda and to promote free thought. This title was one of the most popular in the ASE series, but is now very hard to find. Featured in the Grolier Club exhibit "The Best Read Army in the World", on view through December 30, 2023.

Aluminum case is bright with minor wear. Recipe pages are clean, with minor staining on recipes # 180 and 181. Section dividers are very clean. This is a beautiful example of an unusual Depression-era cookbook.

"Recipe Book of the Movie Stars, In Which 100 Screen Luminaries Reveal Their Culinary Secrets!". Contains over 200 recipes attributed to Hollywood actors of the 1930s, including Clark Gable (angel food cake), James Cagney (ragout of kidneys), and Jean Harlow (hot rolls). 1 inch tear at bottom of front cover, slight wear to spine edge, some very light marks on back cover. Pages are clean, no marks or folds. This copy is in remarkable condition for its age. Very hard to find!
