First Holiday edition, issued the year after this title's first appearance, but a year before Winne-the-Pooh, this volume is much larger than the original trade edition and features a new, color illustrated dust jacket and cover, which is reproduced in black-and-white as the title page. This collection of poems by Milne with Shepard's inspired illustrations was the surprise hit of 1924, going through numerous printings in the first few months after its publication. This "Holiday edition" was produced in the US as a gift edition for the following holiday season.
Synopsis
This collection of poetry by A. A. Milne and illustrated by E. H. Shepard has been delighting children and adults alike since being published in 1924. While dated, most of the simple, humorous poems remain magical and relevant to today's children. The book begins with an introduction entitled "Just Before We Begin," which introduces a narrator that might be Christopher Robin. Winnie the Pooh is included in the poem, "Teddy Bear," which originally appeared in Punch magazine in February 1924.
Reviews
I read these poems as a child; probably my first book of poems. I loved them then for the whimisical and magical feelings the poems inspire as well as the simple humour a child can well understand and adults still appreciate. The creative imaginations of A. A. Milne will always be cherished in my heart and literary appreciation.
