About This Item

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1932. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Hardcover in dark maroon cloth lettered in gilt. 158 pp. Illustrated with photographs. Very good, small spot to the outer front cover, small chip top gutter fold, spine lettering dulled. One of the scarcer early 20th century American football books, a defense of the game that, particularly during the first two decades of the twentieth century, was increasingly criticized as being too rough and brutal. The author's intent in this defense of the game as it was in the 1920s and early 30s was, (from the introduction): "..an attempt to take the reader backstage, where he may see the inside if the football organization and my form his conclusions from a knowledge of the facts, rather than from hearsay...". He touches on such subjects player reactiosn on game days, five-a-week practice scrimages, football deaths in 1931 and role of doctors, coaching, reporting of games, financial considerations.
