About This Item

Chicago, IL: The Reilly & Britton Co, 1918. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Plus in Good Plus Dustjacket. John R. Neill. Quarto. 9 1/4 in. x 7 3/6 in. There was only one printing of the first edition, this being in red cloth. Front cover paper label illustrated in full color. Verso of ownership page lists titles through The Tin Woodsman of Oz. 12 full-color plates. A wee bit of smudging to front paper label and some negligible rubbing to extremities. A bright and lovely copy of this OZ book.

Housed in supplied dustjacket from later edition (probably 1946) the rear flap of which lists titles to "The Magical Mimics in Oz". Jacket shows smudging and a small area of chipping to top and bottom of spine.

A beaitiful copy of one of scarcer OZ books, and arguably, one of the most romantic tales by an author
who once said he didn't believe the romance between adults should have much place in children's literature. Interestingly, "the first longhand draft of the manuscript survives, one of only three still extant. The bulk of his manuscripts are said to have been destroyed by his widow..." (Bienvenue and Schmidt, p. 74).
