'First published in 1949'' stated on copyright page, "8/6 net / Ages 5-7" printed on lower corner of front flap of dust jacket, ads for the first three books in the Tim series on the rear flap of dust jacket. This is the first post-war book in the 'Tim' series and the first to be designed in the smaller 4to format. Additionally, at the request of Oxford University Press's US department, Ardizzone changed the character of the ship's cook from a black man to a white man (Alderson p. 72). Very Good, previous owner's inscription in blue ink to front free endpaper, age-toning to pages, some soiling to margins of a few pages, bumping and rubbing to binding, in Very Good dust jacket with heavy foxing showing through from verso, chips missing from head and tail of spine as well as heads and tails of fore edges, 1" tear to lower edge of front cover, overall rubbing and age-toning.
