New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1964. First American Edition. First Printing. Octavo (21.75cm); brown cloth, with titles stamped in pale yellow on spine; dustjacket; [10],11-256pp; illus. Signed by the author on the title page, and inscribed on the front endpaper to J. Wayne Fredericks, the former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs (1961-67): "To Wayne, With admiration and affection, and respect for his leadership - specially in gaining and deserving the trust of the new nations / Hugh Caradon." Light wear to spine ends, else Near Fine. Dustjacket is price-clipped, lightly edgeworn, with a few tiny nicks and tears, light dust-soil to rear panel, and two fingernail-sized impressions along the front joint; Very Good+. Memoir recounting the British diplomat's extensive career. Foot (1907-1990), Baron Caradon, was the last Governor and Commander in Chief of colonial Cyprus, Colonial Secretary of Jamaica, Chief Secretary for Nigeria, and the UK's permanent representative to the United Nations.
