About This Item

San Francisco: Bedford Arts, 1991. A fine copy. 10 x 10 inches. 130, [2] pages. 62 black-and-white photographs. Original printed wrappers with folded flaps at front and back. First U.S. edition of Fukase's masterpiece, with an introductory note by David Travis and an afterword by Akira Hasegawa. Printed by Toppan Printing in Tokyo, one of the leading photobook printers, and designed by Kazuyuki Goto. Fukase's book first appeared with the titled 'Ravens' when it was published five years earlier in Tokyo. This English-language edition made this stunning series of photographs available in the U.S., with contextualizing essays that compared Fukase to Weegee, William Klein and Robert Frank. For the first edition, which now has legendary status (and a commensurate price), see Parr & Badger Vol. I, page 306.
