The first edition of this work of historical fiction by Sir Walter Scott, set in southwest Scotland in 1756. The three volume first edition, first issue of this Waverley novel by Walter Scott.Set in Dumfriesshire in 1765, the novel describes the beginnings of a fictional third Jacobite Rebellion, and includes "Wandering Willie's Tale", a famous short story which frequently appears in anthologies of Scott's works.This novel has been described as 'the most autobiographical of Scott's novels' by Andrew Lang and Magnus Magnusson.Todd 178Aa, with each volume retaining the title page and fly-title.With two leaves of publisher's advertisements to the rear of volume III.With the former owner's bookplate of D.B. Anderson to the front free endpaper of volume I. In half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Blind tooling to back strips. Front joint of volume III starting, with board holding firm, but leather at spine head lifting. Head of rear joint of volume I starting and firmly held. Rubbing to board centres. Bookplate to volume I front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Concentrated spotting to first and last few leaves of each volume, with pages otherwise clean and bright, with only the occasional light spot and handling mark. Good
