About This Item

Leadenhalle Presse, 1884 146, [18] printed pages, many unopened. Illustrations. Printed in Pearl type on bank note paper of the highest quality. At head of title: Midget folio .The miniature book is embedded in the hollowed out blank leaves at the end of the enlarged edition. The larger book has 94 printed pages- some very occasional spotting, four blank leaves with contemporaneous newspaper cuttings pasted in (Mark Twain with the Typothetae, c. 1886), followed by 2 pages of publisher's adverts. 12 x 15 cm, original vellum, lacking ties; on the upper cover, below the gilt titling is the helpful advice "In unlocking this Forme see that the QUADS do not drop out" (priced "7/6"). The miniature book is 27 x 40 mm. Original gilt titled vellum (priced "2/6")with long silk ties (all but one intact). Quads are small metal blanks used by printers to fill up any gaps. The text contains English and American printer's jokes from the Paper and Printing Trades Journal, such as, Figures won't lie! Yes they will if you make em- and then there are four digits printed at 90 degrees from normal along the page. "One of the most curious items in all printing literature and at the same time a most unusual miniature book" -Bondy, 149-50. Spielmann, 492. Welsh, 6857. WorldCat locates just 4 UK copies (Universities of Nottingham, Manchester, Oxford & Cambridge). Not only uncommon, particularly so in this condition.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

About Camden Lock Books, ABA, IOBA.

My online bookselling is Camden Lock books. I own Camden Lock Books & list books that are uncommon, in demand and may be hard to find.

My book expertise came with four years as Chairman of London P.B.F.A. , many more years of exhibiting at monthly London Rare Book Fairs & owning my own bookshops continuously since 1984.

Every book here was valued by the person who first bought it and will be just as prized by the person who buys it now from my shopping website.

I am an accredited professional & a full member of the ABA, ILAB and the IOBA, "Setting the standard. The books you want...from booksellers you can trust".

You can meet me on my stand at Firsts 2024, London's Rare Book Fair, at the Saatchi Gallery, London SW3 4RY, 16-19 May 2024.
I also am joint owner of Burley Fisher Books , an independent bookshop offering new and secondhand books.
