About This Item

London: Hirschfeld Brothers, 1900. First edition. Hardback. Good. 9" by 7". None. A comprehensive glossary of words, phrases and turns of expression used in Public Schools around 1900. A First Edition of this uncommon work, in publisher's boards. This interesting and amusing work documents the unique words, slang and peculiar phrases used by those attending Public Schools in and around 1900. The author claims that some of these phrases are obsolete while others were still frequently used at the time of publishing. Some may still be recognised today. Written by John Farmer, a British lexicographer and writer who was most well-known for his seven-volume dictionary on slang. In this particular work, Farmer details all the necessary words and phrases for a person attending public school. These include a Nipperkin, being a stony jug used for beer, and a Swinger, meaning a box on the ears, among many others. With a library plate to the front paste down, for the City of Cardiff Public Libraries. In publisher's boards. Externally generally smart, with slight wear to the extremities. Slight loss to the front board near the top edge. Spotting to the boards and spine. Age toning and slight spotting to the endpapers. Library bookplate to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd handling mark. Good
