Binding tight and appears little read; no annotation or inscriptions - pervious owners name to front endpaper dated 1988; toning to page-ends but text and illustrations bright and clear throughout.

The first Promenade concerts or 'Proms' as they later became, were performed in London during the early years of the nineteenth century. They were a nationalistic idea that has now become an international phenomenon. For concert goers and music-lovers the Proms have become a familiar way of life. The earliest Proms were performed in London theatres and even in public houses like the famous Crown and Anchor. By 1895 they had become popular enought to start a regular repertoire at the Queens Hall London. The conductor was the young Henry Wood - a name which has become synonymous with the Proms. After the war the concerts were transferred to the Royal Albert Hall where they have continued ever since to draw large audiences.
