About This Item
96 printed pages (a few marginal handling marks and mild age-toning). Printed in Spanish in a fine 4 1/2-point typeface. All edges gilt over red. Original marbled endpapers. 59 x 82 mm. Contemporary red half calf. Spine with five raised gilt pointille bands; compartments with hand-tooled flowers in gilt , within twin ruled bands. Boards with marbled paper within twin gilt ruled borders. Garcilaso was a professional soldier in Charles V's army and died of his battle wounds. This book constitutes his most celebrated works: Sonetos (Sonnets), Canciones (Songs), Églogas (Eclogues), two Elegías (Elegies), and the Epístola a Boscán (Letter to Boscán). Garcilaso was a significant influence on and is mentioned in multiple works by Miguel de Cervantes. In the second volume of Don Quixote, the protagonist quotes one of the poet's sonnets. In Cervantes short story, El licenciado Vidriera, Tomás Rodaja carries a volume of Garcilaso on his journey across Europe. Bondy, 98. Welsh, 2944. OCLC, 18592819. WorldCat locates 2 copies worldwide (the copy of María de las Mercedes, Queen consort of Alfonso XII, King of Spain in Madrid and University of Virginia). Bondy mentions a copy in the British Library as being "of high quality and great literary interest I had never encountered before and of which I cannot find any mention in my reference books". Welsh mentions a single copy from a catalogue 1242 of 'Minuscules' from Voulche-Delbosc (?). Not in Spielmann. This is a rare and beautifully bound miniature poetry edition in Spanish.
