About This Item

London: Chapman and Hall, 1957. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None. The first edition of Evelyn Waugh's novel 'The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold'. 'The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold' is a novel first published in 1957 by Evelyn Waugh. Strong parallels may be drawn between events in the novel overtaking the eponymous protagonist, Gilbert Pinfold, and episodes in the author's own life. First edition, in unclipped dustwrapper. In fact, Waugh later admitted that 'Mr Pinfold"s experiences were almost exactly my own', referring to this period in his life as 'my late lunacy'. He was advised to write the book by the then head of the psychiatric department at St Bartholomew's Hospital who interpreted the voices Waugh heard as hallucinations consequential to prolonged overconsumption of a mix of phenobarbitone and alcohol. Arthur Evelyn St. John Waugh (1903 - 1966), known as Evelyn Waugh, was an English writer of novels, travel books and biographies. He was also a prolific journalist and reviewer. In a cloth binding with unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, excellent. Minor wear to extremities and the odd mark. Dustwrapper slight edgewear, minor loss to head of spine and handling marks to rear. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean throughout with only the odd slight spot. Near Fine
