The story within a story is mainly about the Fraziers, the sole inhabitants of an isolated desert oasis watered by an underground river. It is here that family friend and famous painter of desert scenes, Galen Andrews, tells the story of Frazier to his chauffeur, Croy, who is the first person protagonist of our story. Frazier, a bitter ex-marine with a bullet wound, arrives at the oasis and falls in love with the desert and the unusual people that he encounters. There's also a blossoming romance and a search for hidden treasure.
