About This Item

London: Frederick Westley and A. H. Davis, 1830. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 6". Various. A first edition copy of the second volume of Robert Walsh's fascinating work on Brazil, written as a part of an effort to abolish the slave trade. Robert Walsh was a renowned Irish clergyman, historian, writer and physician who travelled extensively in Brazil, investigating the conditions of the slaves. His findings were published in this text 'Notices of Brazil in 1828 and 1829', where he detailed the manners and customs of the Brazilian people in an attempt to lead the reader to appreciate Brazilian culture, and promote the end of slavery in the country. This copy is the second volume copy only, lacking the first volume. With ten plates, each with a protective tissue guard, and a folding coloured map of 'Part of the Provinces of Rio De Janeiro and the Minas Gerais with the Author's Route'. This volume also features a reproduced sheet of music to the rear of the text. In a full cloth binding with black morocco spine label with gilt title. Externally generally smart, bumped to extremities and head and tail of spine. Bumping to head and tail of spine resulting in splits to cloth, with slight loss and cloth lifting. Rubbing to spine label resulting in slight loss. Fading and slight marking. Hinges slightly strained but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to edges but bright and clean, with the odd spot and handling mark to the occasional page, heavier to first and last few pages. Small closed tear to gutter of folding frontispiece map, image unaffected. Very Good
